The Jūrmala Museum and the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Latvia, to promote research into the history of Jūrmala and promote the popularization of science, and continuing the recently started tradition, are organizing an international scientific conference on April 8–9, 2027, at the Jūrmala Museum (Tirgoņu Street 29, Jūrmala).

We kindly invite historians, archaeologists, ethnographers, landscape and environmental scientists, art and architectural historians, and representatives of other scientific fields who are interested in fishing and the life and culture of fishermen in various historical periods to submit research papers for the conference, with a view to their publication in the museum's periodical! Researchers from Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, Germany, and other Northern European countries are also invited to participate in the conference.

The conference will address issues related to the history of Jūrmala fishing and fishermen, as well as the development trends in fishing throughout different historical periods in the Baltic Sea region. The conference plans to pay greater attention to the economic, social, and cultural aspects of fishermen's lives, including the following research questions:

  • the history of fishing from the 16th to the 20th century, its formation and economic significance;
  • fishermen and their work and everyday life over the centuries - social and demographic aspects;
  • the material culture of fishermen: archaeological and ethnographic evidence;
  • the representation of fishermen and fishing in culture (in art, literature, music, etc.);
  • fishing and politics over the centuries, management of fishing communities;
  • evidence of fishing in museum collections;
  • and other important topics in the history of Jūrmala.

The conference executive committee and the editorial board of the scientific periodical “Jūrmala Museum Research Papers” will inform about the inclusion of papers in the conference program by September 25 of this year. During the conference, both a public discussion and an excursion to important historical sites in Jūrmala are planned.
